OBJECT FETISH #14: Dolce e Gabbana corset
If you're looking for the perfect fusion of fashion and fetish, it's natural to turn to the corset. The whaleboned foundation of feminine fashion for centuries (and underpinning quite a few male sartorial excursions also) this undergarment was triumphantly reclaimed as outerwear, in 1992 dubbed by none less than Karl Lagerfeld as the most important fashion (re)invention in years. Dolce e Gabbana are modern masters of the corsetier's art, turning away from the established fashion cannon of understated Armani ease and lycra-suctioned Versace razzmatazz into old-school Hollywood glamour for their 1991 La Dolce Vita collection, and reinventing underwear every season since. Think of their cherry and rose-strewn chiffon frocks for A/W 1996, swathed under and around elasticated girdles and long-line brassieres; their S/S 2003 criss-cross laced cocktail frock; and this gilt-festooned show-stopper for A/W 2010.
