The Walk-Through at Peter Jensen
Dialogue from Silence of the Lambs isn't usually the fodder of fashion press releases, even at its darkest schlocky echelons. But Peter Jensen is an exception to every fashion rule and that's the reason we love him. For S/S 2009 the show was titled 'Jodie', as always betraying both his inspirations and ideal heroine of the collection. In this instance it was Jodie Foster that roamed Jensen's catwalk, dressed not only as Clarice Starling (attache cases, oversized tailored jackets and grey marl jogging-suits) but in chiffony evening frocks straight from the wardrobe of Frannie Berry in Hotel Newhampshire and court-room chic courtesy of Sarah Tobias in The Accused. While referencing them heavily in his own mind, Jensen never lets his themes overpower the clothes. Remember Clarice's revelation that we covet what we see everyday? Well Jensen's everyday staples were wearable, salable and indeed often covetable - witness sensational flat-brogues in mustardy satin and the beautiful Julie Verhoeven print fabrics. This show won't win Jensen any new recruits, but for those already buying into his quirky classics with a twist there was much to choose from. Oh, and one more thing Mr jensen: love your suits.
