Judy Linn's beautiful portrait of Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe is current on show in The Photography of Punk exhibition at SHOWstudio's Shop. Originally 'taken to sell jewellery, even though it never did', the photograph continues to evoke an image of punk that still captures the collective imagination today.
In a candid phone call with Nick Knight, Linn she shares the process of producing this iconic image, her initial response to the shoot as 'a failure' and her collaborative relationship with the couple. 'It was like Robert was the art director, but the ones he's in, I'm the art director,' she explains. Listen to the phone call and others in the series including Jon Savage and Ray Stevenson now.
