McBean Unmasked

With the unseen Erwin Blumenfeld films project gathering speed and test edits and soundtracks being e-mailed from Adam Mufti to Olivier Alary's account and back again with some frequency, the Editorial Department's thoughts turn to 1940s Surrealism. Laura and I found ourselves at the late viewing of the NPG's Angus McBean retrospective last night, where we were looking for some (quintessentially English) inspiration. Turns out that as well as being the only English fashion photographer to rival Beaton in wit and visual panache, McBean was also a leading mask maker, creating virtuoso pieces for Ivor Novello among other key theatrical patrons of the day. We hope these beauties (Greta Garbo and Mae West among them), together with some peculiar set designs from the exhibitions, prompt you to get going on your Bal Masqué outfit and mask submissions before the season starts in earnest!
