Out of Print by David James

Print is dead. Long live print! Or, at least, a clarion call to that effect seems to be in order at the 'Digital Moment' we seem to be experiencing. While fashion journalism, editorial and increasingly advertising turns to the Internet, the concept of the retrospective exhibition is still firmly mired in the tangible, physical realm of the weighty coffee table tome or mounted exhibition. Visionary creative director David James has chosen to challenge that, showcasing twenty-two years of innovation via a unique Web platform, in an exhibition appropriately titled 'Out of Print' and available online for two months only.

James himself states: 'As digital media becomes the dominant media, I want this exhibition to mark the beginning of a new way of working for the studio. Our practice is no longer focused on two-dimensional representations, but all possible dimensions.' It is fitting that James champions the online medium in such a fashion, particularly given the recent explosion in fashion's communication via the Internet - witness the innovative harnessing of the web for Prada's spring campaigns, showcasing film shorts by Yang Fudong and Steven Meisel across a number of web platforms. James' innovations as art director behind Prada's visual communication over the past fourteen years (understandably) form a major part of the chronological exhibition, alongside award-winning record sleeves, artists’ monographs, catalogues and magazine and advertising layouts, for a variety of names including Boy George, Christian Dior, Alexander McQueen and AnOther Magazine.

The interesting elements is that James enhances his work through online presentation - indeed, enhancing work that has a physical presence that could easily have been showcased in book or exhibition form. Instead, James pushes the possibilities offered by an online showcase, with alternate views of articles and 'Idea Evolution' text unravelling the inspirations and concepts behind each of the objects that, in retrospect, have become icons of their type.

'Out Of Print' by David James is showcased online at http://davidjames-outofprint.com from 15 March 2010 - 15 May 2010
