PORTRAIT - RICK OWENS: First shot of the day!

It's early January, but we're already plunging headlong into our first shoot of 2009, with portraits of Rick, by Nick - Owens and Knight respectively, to be featured in this Winter's issue of Arena Homme Plus. The set up for this shoot is slightly unusual: Rick is modelling his own A/W 2009 menswear, set to be unveiled later this month for the first time as part of Paris Menswear week and although his long-term collaborator Panos Yiapanis is acting as stylist, there are no hair or make-up artists to assist with the shoot.

In keeping with Owens' distinctly dark aesthetic and the decadent, dandyish elegance of his menswear, Nick Knight has been examining the belle epoque aesthete Comte Robert de Montesquiou-Fezensac, his 'Black and Gold' portraits by Whistler, and Joris-Karl Huysman's Symbolist masterpiece À rebours, throwing in a few references to Italian Renaissance 'Scraffito' technique to indicate how the final photographs may eventually appear. Nick will be shooting five portraits of Rick in a selection of garments from his upcoming collection, and straight-up as that sounds, there are a few twists to come later in the course of the shoot.

SHOWstudio will be filming the entire process to edit into a short 'behind the scenes' film documenting the shoot, alongside posing five questions to Rick covering his aesthetic, inspirations and approach to fashion design. Stay tuned for more as the day progresses...
