Puking Millie's Solo Performance
Last night Over It & Co and the Arthur and Albert Studio collaborated
to curate a unique performance piece from artist Millie Brown. Brown a.k.a Puking Millie; a member of the South London based art collective !WOWOW!, continued to push the boundaries of the relationship between vulgarity and art. The solo show, entitled 'Series Black' featured a room filled with rainbow coloured canvases reminiscent of simplified Jackson Pollock paintings. However, the creative process behind Brown's canvases ran much deeper than a paint palette and brush. Beneficially, the audience then got to witness a hooded figure stride toward an empty canvas encouraged by an ear-piercing bout of classical music and gracefully (and strategically) vomit a cerise pink liquid onto the white textile. During this time, a film by Jez Tozer, originally made for SHOWstudio.com as part of our Political Fashion series, was projected onto a wall and appropriately acted as an ominous backdrop for the show. Millie admits that she gains a 'sense of purity' post-puke and has 'never found it vulgar' despite her concept being one that exposes and further challenges how perceptions of revulsion can be made spectacular.
Earlier this year Millie collaborated with legendary image-maker Nick Knight and fashion filmmaker Ruth Hogben to create spectacular video imagery for Lady Gaga's epic Monster Ball Tour. The footage, which stars Lady Gaga herself and Millie Brown, can be seen here.
SHOWstudio.com will be collaborating with Puking Millie again this Spring, as part of the forthcoming Inside/Out exhibition in the SHOWstudio SHOP. Brown will execute two LiveStudio performances including a new venture; the construction of a mythical taxidermy beast, and of course more puking!
