There was a ripple of surprise when Tom Ford told as that there would be less suits and ties this season - 'everyone knows we make beautiful tailoring, we make suits for almost every actor you would know,' he explained - but calm was restored when it became clear that Ford's casual turn was just as brilliantly excessive and opulent as his evening wear. Tom Ford's parkas come lined with coyote, while his trainers had spent three whole days being polished. So, the surface of A/W 14 may have been easy at first glance, but look a little closer and no detail had been overlooked.
While the pieces themselves were more adventurous and playful - until now Ford had held off from embracing sneaker fever - the palette has been muted from last season. Rich autumnal tones made up the bulk of the collection; burgundy, deep blue and, naturally, Ford's signature, inky black. It was a firm departure from the cheery bold colourful pops from last season, but kept the collection feeling sensual and adult, despite the youthful lace-up trainers. That said, Ford's version of a 'tennis shoe' as he calls it, comes in a perfectly fantastical navy velvet. It's hardly throw-on streetwear is it? Oh to live in the Tom Ford universe where even everyday items are so rich and luxurious. Wouldn't the world be a more beautiful place?
