Walter Van Beirendonck has a good soul. For his spring collection, entitled Cloud #9 the designer explored happiness and positive thinking. 'Dream the world Awake' slogans adorned colourful clothes including short-sleeved suits, wide leg pants, signature all-on ones and double-breasted jackets topped off with bow ties.
Reworking some ideas from last season including the new focus on structured garments and slits in jumpers, Beirendonck also introduced cut away shirting, arm length gloves and abstract shapes, showing the designers conceptual approach and love for colour.
Candy coloured gear was fused with references to quaffed gents of the 50′s as models sported combs in their exaggerated hairstyles. The finale involved a lively parade of colourful tulle clothing/installations created in collaboration with Austrian artist Erwin Wurm, which offered witty Leigh Bowery proportions. And on that note every left feeling more optimistic.
In September Van Beirendonck will stage his first large-scale retrospective at the Antwerp Fashion Museum.
