Alexandra Bachzetsis is an artist, performer and choreographer. Born in 1974 in Zurich, Bachzetsis initially studied in Germany and Belgium before completing a postgraduate theatre and dance course at Das Arts, Amsterdam. Whilst training, she collaborated on performances with dance companies Sasha Waltz & Guests and Les Ballets C. de la B.
Since 2001, Bachzetsis has worked independently, producing and presenting her own work in theatres and contemporary art venues. As a choreographer and dancer, she has authored and co-authored numerous performances across Europe, including Perfect, Bluff and A Piece Danced Alone.
Bachzetsis' work constitutes an inquiry into genres of performing arts, techniques of choreography and forms of scenic behaviour. Her main interest lies in the codes that govern gestures, both in everyday life and on stage. In her performances, Bachzetsis embodies and diverts stereotypical representations of women in contemporary popular culture, show business and the sex industry, to invoke reflection and inspire empowerment.
In 2007, Bachzetsis received the Migros Kulturprozent Jubilee Award and co-founded the artists collective Company together with Lies Vanborm and Tina Bleuler. The following year she took part in the 5th Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art and had a major solo exhibition titled SHOW.
Bachzetsis received the Swiss Art Award and was nominated for the Deste Prize in Athens in 2011.
