Ann-Sofie Back is a fashion designer from Sweden, who is based in London. She draws inspiration from Stenhamra, a downbeat suburb of Stockholm where she spent some time. Back completed an MA in womenswear at Saint Martin's in 1998, and has shown a pret-a-porter collection in London each season since October 2001. Her clothing champions the everyday and the banal, often celebrating the details of the disposable. Failed everyday glamour, accidental embarrassment and the transformative properties of clothing have been frequent motifs in Back's collections. She has established a signature incorporation of faux 'aspirational' fabrics and accessories - mock glam, fake gilt buttons, leatherette and velour are often mixed with more day-to-day grey marl and white cotton. Back is acclaimed for her experimental silhouettes and approach to draping and knotting of fabrics. Back styled the Spring/Summer 2001 Miu Miu campaign, and continues to contribute to Dazed and Confused, Self Service, Purple and Doing Bird. Her work has been featured in group design exhibitions at the ICA and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, the Palais du Tokio and Musee de la Mode de la Ville, Paris, and 'Reshape' at the Venice Biennale, 2003.
