Creating his house in 1945, Pierre Balmain swiftly gained an envious reputation for dressing some of the most iconic and beautiful women of the 20th Century. Marlene Dietrich, Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot all became fans of Balmain's signature delicate drapery and intricate embroideries, and the house became part of a firmament defining haute couture's 'Golden Age' through the 1950s and 60s.
Following Balmain's death in 1982, the house continued under the successive creative leadership of Erik Mortensen, Oscar de la Renta and Christophe Decarnin, with each developing the house's innate femininity and youthfulness. Balmain appointed Olivier Rousteng as creative director in April 2011.
