Bella Freud is a fashion designer working in London. Following two years of studies in Rome, she launched her eponymous womenswear label in 1990. Her style mixes ‘prim’ elements, such as traditional tweeds and restrictive tailoring, with ‘kinky’ detailing, mini-hemlines, and a focus on now-trademark knits. Freud has designed for Kangol, Jaeger and Biba, in addition to working under her own name. To replace the traditional catwalk show, Freud has worked with John Malkovich in two memorable short films to showcase her 1999 collections, and for Autumn/Winter 2000 she created a magazine in collaboration with Anita Pallenberg. In 2007 she collaborated with model and photographer Elle Muliarchyk, resulting in a series of images featuring Elle in Bella’s clothing photographed around London. These photographs express the symmetry of playfulness and seriousness in both image and clothing design.
