Christabel Stewart

Curator

Christabel Stewart is an independent curator, lecturer and arts editor. After studying Art History to honours at Glasgow University she completed a Contemporary Art Curating MA at the Royal College of Art, London.

Stewart was Arts Editor of SHOWstudio from 2004-2007. Initially curating SHOWstudio 01, a portfolio set of editions from key contributors to the site, the role grew intially into curator of real world events as SHOWstudio's profile developed substantially on and off the internet, and then arts editor.

In spring 2003, together with curator Darren Flook she launched 'Hotel', a project space run from a domestic property, that has subsequently become a representing gallery. Previously assistant curator of fig-1, Mark Francis' '50 projects in 50 weeks' exhibition programme set up in Soho, London in 2001, the project enabled artists, and other creative practitioners to exhibit work fresh from the studio, or work in progress. Stewart has also worked as part of the team at Cubitt, an independent artist run studio and gallery in Kings Cross.

She has contributed to various art publications and catalogues and is a visiting lecturer at Kingston University. In 2006 she became Senior Art Editor for Tank, and in 2014 the Director of tank.tv, curating film and video online and hosting residencies, exhibitions and performance in its exhibition space.
