Over time, the company grew from specialising solely on muslin and spinning cotton to knitting and hosiery manufacture. John Smedley took over the business alone by the end of the 18th century, emphasising the best quality of raw materials. The company is family-owned to this day. 

Following generations of Smedleys expanded the company's offer to underwear, knitted outerwear, swimwear and nightwear for both men and women. They have established their signature sweater line in the sixties. During the same time, the British Royal family recognized their craft with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth visiting the mill to see the production. Consequently, John Smedley brand earned the reputation of the official knitwear supplier to the Palace. In 2013, John Smedley received the Royal Warrant of Appointment from Her Majesty The Queen as ‘Manufacturer of Fine Knitwear’.”

The brand is currently known for producing some of the finest knitwear in Britain while excelling at hand-crafted finishing techniques. John Smedley products are exported internationally to 35 countries. They have collaborated with established designers from Yves Saint Laurent to Prada as well as emerging British designers Phoebe English, Holly Fulton, Claire Barrow, Ashley Williams and 1205. Today, John Smedley are operating in childrenswear and present their collections during both London Collections: Men and during London Fashion Week for menswear and womenswear, respectively.
