Paul Smith

Fashion Designer

Sir Paul Smith is a fashion designer. Born in Nottinghamshire in 1946, he left school at age 16 before opening up his first shop in 1970. In 1976, Smith showed his first men’s collection in Paris. In 1998, Smith showed his first women's collection at London Fashion Week and has since expanded to cover children’s clothing, accessories, fragrance and home decor, producing a total of 15 collections a year. His design trademark is a quirky take on British classics.

Smith was knighted in 2000. A monograph on the designer, You Can Find Inspiration in Everything (*And If You Can't, Look Again!), was published by Violette Editions in 2010.

In 2020, the brand celebrated its 50th anniversary, marked by the release of Paul Smith; a book of 50 objects that have inspired the designer. Paul Smith’s Foundation was also launched, which is an online archive of the best advice Smith has given and received over the decades, aimed at helping young creatives.
