Rebecca Arnold

Fashion Historian

Rebecca Arnold is an academic and currently the Oak Foundation Lecturer in History of Dress and Textiles at the Courtauld Institute of Art, where she is Course Leader for MA Dress, Body, Space and Modernity: Fashion in the City, 1919-1939.  

Previously, Arnold was a Research Fellow and Lecturer in Design History at the Royal College of Art and a Visiting Fellow at the V&A Museum. She has lectured internationally and in 2001 she set up the first undergraduate course in Fashion History and Theory, based at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design. In 2006 she was Guest Professor at the Centre for Fashion Studies at Stockholm University.

Arnold has published widely on 20th and 21st century fashion, including three books; Fashion, Desire and Anxiety: Image and Morality in the 20th Century (2001), The American Look: Fashion, Sportswear and the Image of Women in 1930s and 1940s New York (2009) and Fashion: A Very Short Introduction (2009). She also runs the Instagram account @documenting_fashion.
