Sergio Rossi

Fashion Designer

Sergio Rossi is an Italian footwear and fashion company, founded by designer Sergio Rossi in 1951 in San Mauro Pascoli, Italy. He launched his eponymous brand in 1968. Primarily producing sandals for the patrons of riviera resorts like Rimini, Rossi first hit on a broad audience with a strappy sandal called Opanca. Expanding rapidly from the 1980s to the millennium, opening stores in major cities across the world, Sergio Rossi also began to work alongside some of the major European fashion houses creating footwear for labels such as Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and Azzedine Alaïa. In late 2008, Francesco Russo was appointed Creative Director of the Sergio Rossi brand, which grew to incorporate women's and men's ready-to-wear, bags and accessories alongside its footwear. Russo left in 2013, after four years. He was succeeded by Angelo Ruggeri as design director, who held the position until 2016.

Sergio Rossi, the brand's founder, died in April 2020 at the age of 84, of COVID-19 complications.
