Born in Kent, Webster was educated at the Medway College of Design (now the University for the Creative Arts, Rochester). After completing his training under Tony Shepherd, Webster worked as a craftsman for several established London design houses. Following a brief return to the UK in 1984, Webster he identified a potential market for his jewellery in California, where his bold style combined with a brave use of colourful, exotic gems attracted a freethinking and fashion-savvy, west coast clientele. Webster returned to London in 1989 to establish Stephen Webster Ltd. Building his brand with a distinctly British heritage and passion for traditional goldsmith, which remains at the heart of the Stephen Webster brand today. In 2007, Webster was awarded an honorary Master of Arts degree from the University for the Creative Arts, and in 2013 he was appointd Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to training and skills in the British jewellery industry.
