Heavily influenced by the surfwear trends in California during the 1980s, Shawn Stussy defined his brand by scrawling his signature across handcrafted surfboards. To help promote his product, he started screen-printing graphic T-shirts featuring his trademark graffiti tag signature. While the company worked to create a new vision of clothing with a casual sophistication that worked on the West Coast, it became noticed in New York and London.
Today, the company has 60+ stores worldwide and is directed by Nick Bower. In keeping with his new vision, Stussy’s aesthetic has turned to the emerging hip-hop trends, incorporating street-wear designs with his trademark signature. It has also gained popularity amongst a number of celebrities including Drake, Fredo Santana and A$AP Rocky.
The Stussy x SHOWstudio collaboration was inspired by the early works of American artist Richard Serra and Lawrence Weiner’s book, ‘Displacement.’ The collaboration, entitled the ‘Displacement’ Capsule Collection, features one-of-a-kind pieces that have been reconstructed and sewn together with its colour-contrasted counterpart; resulting in a one-of- a-kind collection.
