Thakoon was founded in 2004 by Thailand-born designer Thakoon Panichgul. The label intends to mirror the diversity of Panichgul’s background, who left Thailand as a child to be raised in Omaha before relocating to New York. After completing his business degree at Boston Panichgul spent four years as a writer and editor for Harper’s Bazaar before enrolling in a design course at Parsons School of Design. His first ready-to-wear collection was presented in September 2004. Thakoon was one of three recipients of the Vogue/CFDA Fashion Fund in 2006, and was also nominated for the CFDA/Swarovski Award for Best Emerging Womenswear Designer. In 2009 Thakoon was appointed the Creative Director of the Japanese high-end jewellery brand Tasaki.
