Versace

Fashion Designer

The house of Versace was founded in 1978 by designer Gianni Versace, showing men's and women's collections in Milan, Italy. In 1989, Versace established its Atelier Versace line of alta moda (couture) dresses.

Versace's fashion shows of the late 1980s and early 1990s were credited with helping to create the cultural phenomenon of the 'supermodels', a cadre of top fashion models including Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell. The early 1990s Versace collections were notable for their exuberant combinations of print, embroidery and heavy embellishment; the Greek cipher and the Medusa-head motif featured in them became Versace trademarks. The house has been a favourite label amongst music figures and celebrities, including Madonna, Elizabeth Hurley, Jennifer Lopez, Elton John, Prince, and Diana, Princess of Wales.

In July 1997, shortly after presenting his Autumn/Winter haute couture collection in Paris, Gianni Versace was killed outside his Miami home. His sister, Donatella Versace, who had headed the Versace Versus diffusion line since its inception in 1989, was named creative director of the Versace Group.

In December 2017, Donatella Versace was awarded with the “Fashion Icon” award during the British Fashion Council's Fashion Awards, while in 2018 she won the CFDA's International Award. That same year she was honoured as “Designer of the Year” both by British GQ and by GQ China, and awarded the “Fashion Icon Award” at the GQ Awards in Berlin. She has also received the CNMI Award in recognition of sustainability at the Green Carpet Fashion Awards in 2018.

Besides fashion, the Versace label is famous for perfume and make-up, and it has diversified into interior goods and luxury hotels.
