Stefano Pilati is head designer for Yves Saint Laurent, based in Paris. Born in 1965 in Milan, Pilati first worked as an intern for designer Nina Cerruti. He took his first job in his 20s at a Milanese velvet company studying textiles and selling fabric to major European design houses. Over the years he has worked for Versace, Jil Sander, Dries Van Noten and Valentino as a fabric consultant. In 1993, Pilati was hired at Giorgio Armani as a menswear assistant. In 1995, he went to work at Prada in fabric research and development. Three years later, Pilati became the Assistant Designer at Miu Miu, in womenswear and menswear. In 2000, he began working with Tom Ford at Yves Saint Laurent and in June 2002 ascended to the position of Design Director of all categories under the Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche label. Since working for YSL, Pilati has exhibited reverence for the brand’s history, as well as progressing its innovative use of fabrics and commitment to couture adornment techniques, creating an entirely modern prestige brand.
