Originally from Southern California, fashion designer Rick Owens now lives and works in Paris. He started his label in the early nineties after dropping out of art school. His first catwalk show, at New York Fashion Week in 2001, was sponsored by Vogue and he gained the CFDA New talent award in 2002. Owens soon went on to become artistic director of French furriers Revillon in Paris. After this, he stayed on in Paris to cement his reputation as a designer. He soon introduced a furniture collection, incorporating materials such as raw plywood, antlers, cashmere and marble. Drawing on his experience at Revillon, Owens also designs his own fur collection called Palais Royal after his Paris boutique of the same name. As well as these, he has a collection, ‘RickOwensLilies’, devoted to his signature silk viscose jerseys and ‘DrkShdw’: a denim line. Owens has received numerous awards over the past few years, notably the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for Fashion Design and the Rule Breakers Award from Fashion Group International, both in 2007. The same year also saw the release of his photo book, ‘L’Ai Je Bien Descendu?’ Owens has boutiques in Paris and New York and is scheduled to open one in London’s Mayfair in March 2009.
