LaSalle student expelled for campus graffiti
By Khushwant Singh

A SECOND-YEAR student in fine arts who painted graffiti on his college's new premises has been expelled from school.

He was caught spray painting the words 'Gotta start somewhere' on some steps, a lift door, a pillar and a wall of the LaSalle College of the Arts in McNally Street, off Prinsep Street, on Monday night.

His classmates would have known that the phrase referred to a mantra lecturers used during classes.

Fellow second-year student Joj Chan, 22, said: 'They keep telling us that to be artists, we've got to start somewhere.' He added that at LaSalle's old campus in Goodman Road, off Mountbatten Road, some students painted graffiti on walls and the college had not appeared to mind it.

But the college replied that these were class projects carried out in designated areas. The college spokesman added: 'Our institution respects and promotes the freedom of creative expression but always in a responsible way, without damage to the property of others.'

The culprit was dealt with through the college's student disciplinary procedure and was expelled on Tuesday. The matter has also been referred to the police.

LaSalle said if the student felt he had good grounds to appeal against the expulsion, it would consider them.

Contacted by The Straits Times, the student, 23, said he had not told his parents and asked that his name be withheld from this report.

'I want to see what the police will do before I decide on my next step,' he said. In his blog, he says he is 'a free radical who loves exploring new avenues for artistic expression'.

LaSalle's McNally Street campus, which opened in June, is a $121 million modern structure with black aluminium and granite panels, topped with a 'soaring' roof.

Goodness me !.....to be expelled seems rather harsh...harsh...harsh....harshhh...

If I were him I would appeal as it seems rather a pity that someone with such courage....would be punished so heavily for having taken the meaning of freedom 'to create' ... quite literally...

I suppose that if the college really means what it preaches about the importance of art...it would consider another form of 'punishment'.......but never ever play the role of being obtuse in detriment of the student ......

As the saying goes.... 'Charity begins at home '.........:):):)

i think he insulted hugh dutton's vision of a minimalistic architecture.

but of course, expulsion is a little harsh.

This poor guy didn't alter architecture...let's just say he's put on some gaudy makeup for the school...our climate insults hugh dutton's architecture more...I'm just worried that the building might suffer the same fate as Temasek's campus which was by James Sterling. 4 years into opening there were already plenty of external alterations and internal additions because of climate and spacial requirements.

probably interior would be a better word. and it is as insulting as it would be as external alterations.

For one our very pretty 8m high drawing studios were alternately split into two levels, its weird inside and hindered the ventilation system. The windows had problem with the rising and setting sun...films were added to certain panels, it just looks rather odd with the films on...**snigger** some places had added features and the alterations did change the look of the facade though it didn't do harm to the original structure...just darn "sayang" man.

"sayang" is a term adapted by local chinese and straits chinese from the malay language when in its native use it has got a meaning close to "dear" or "precious" and in the straits chinese context it has an added meaning of having something precious gone to waste.

just in case if anyone wonders what it means.

gaudy makeup is crime!
and enough to be an insult.

for now, rainwater seems to be collecting at the back entrance, because its sloped down. but i guess that can be solved without altering much.

Graffiti is not art , it is vandalism , and must therefore
be treated as such.
I wholeheartedly agree with the college's punishment .
This type of behaviour is a blight on modern urban life.
Graffiti may have been 'cool' and exciting in NY in the '70's
but it is now merely self-referential and tiresome.
Defacement is not decoration .
Banksy should , at the very least , be fined ,
( preferably imprisoned ).
Keep your doodles , slogans and autographs to your school jotters ,
I don't want to see them.

....'.Graffiti in New York '......has a different dimension to ' Graffiti in Singapore '...there is more to it than meets the eye...........:):):)...two different societies....

Those kids in New York didn't have much to complain about when looking back... :):)...I suppose 'BOREDOM ' was the motivation.....when' freedoms' are not a mayor key issue.......and jail is only reserved for true crimes !....

KEITH HARING would be thankful for that ! .....should he had had the opportunity to read this thread....:):):)

Of course graffiti has no place in our societies as a way to express discontent...or dissatisfaction....there are plenty of avenues to channel our ' angers'...if ...and that is if there is a reason for us to have any !!..:):)......when we as a matter of fact can do what we want....when we want....the way we want it...and logically done making sure that there is no detriment to anyone's property....or a fellow man's freedoms...but giving the situation... that we happened to believe that our own personal irreverent 'sacred' believes are the 'true' ones.... as to imposed them on others......then when that happens..... then.... that is when we should all rebel...!! and........ imprisoned those who truly deserve it......if they truly deserve it :):):..............
