A simple shift dress pattern, without sleeves and with no hemming, was Maison Martin Margiela's 2004 contribution to our Design Download series. Engage with the house in a conceptual dialogue by using this as the basis to make a design of your own. As if joining the actual designers at the key stage in the making of a garment, this is your raw material to shape into the new.

Pushing Maison Martin Margiela's Design_Download challenge even further, SHOWstudio invited four established creatives to work from Margiela's pattern to create a dress, to be photographed in a final shoot. Drawing on the idea of Maison Martin Margiela as the 'designer's designer', fellow fashion creatives Hussein Chalayan, Ann-Sofie Back and Swash were invited to complete their own version of Margiela's download, adding their fashion aesthetic to that of the Margiela team, alongside contemporary artist Alexis Marguerite Teplin. SHOWstudio viewers Claudia Rosa Lukas and Ada Fung/Elizabeth Holmstrow were also asked to send their dresses, originally showcased in the Submissions Gallery - to be photographed for this live event.
