About

Controversial London designer Gareth Pugh is the subject of this extensive, collaborative 2006 monograph.

Fêted at the start of his fashion design career for his commitment to creating provocative spectacles over mundane, workaday clothes, in 2006 controversial London designer Gareth Pugh collaborated with SHOWstudio to stage a 'Fash-Off' in parallel with Paris Autumn/Winter haute couture week.

An exhilarating series of art-meets-fashion performances representing his attitude towards the different aspects of his whirlwind fashion career thus far, the afternoon broadcasts focused on themes of boredom and repetition, artifice and multiple personae, high-octane glamour and the falsity of easily-dealt acclaim.

An ongoing Polaroid image diary kept over June 2006 detailed the month in process and two documentary films shot by Pugh during a trip to his native Sunderland provided a unique portrait of the designer's background and image world. The arresting, macabre and even threatening fashion vision Pugh spins from those references is detailed in a selection of catwalk 'highlight' films, while the party thrown to open the series shows Pugh's creativity in play as well as at work.

An extensive, exhaustive document of a designer then on the brink of international stardom, Fash-Off offers a unique glimpse inside the mind of one of the leaders of the noughts explosion of fresh British talent.
