SHOWstudio has supported and collaborated with British designer Gareth Pugh since his very first collections. So who better to mark the 10-year anniversary of the Pugh brand than Nick Knight, who was called on by The Sunday Times Style to shoot a dynamic editorial featuring the most awe-inspiring pieces from the Pugh archive for the 15 March issue? Some of the fashion in the editorial shows off Pugh's skill for architectural construction and his way with angles and geometric lines, while other pieces reflect his more romantic, delicate inclinations, inferring the emotion that always underpins his shows.
Pugh has always embraced the interactive, live element of SHOWstudio and has frequently appeared in front of our webcam, performing and creating in equal measure. He has contributed to numerous SHOWstudio projects including In Fashion and Moving Fashion and - in the earliest stages of his career - has used SHOWstudio as a platform to recruit models for his shows and assistants to work in his studio. Similarly, many of our most striking fashion films feature his work, from Frieze to Joie de Vivre. In November 2009 Pugh took up residence in our studio and made a dress live on camera in an endeavour aptly titled Cutting Edge. In 2010, as part of our Design Download series, he offered up a one-off pattern, allowing viewers to download and print off a Gareth Pugh pattern and fashion their own version of his inflatable balloon outfit. Additionally, in 2006, in a response to his growing fame as a designer, Pugh became the star of the show by appearing in front of our camera in a series of one-off art performances that saw the designer transform himself live on the internet.
Nick Knight has worked with Pugh on numerous shoots and films. He famously shot Pugh's work for the October 2008 cover of Dazed & Confused, an image that has come to define Pugh's darkly romantic aesthetic. Similarly Knight's former assistant, and SHOWstudio's former head of fashion film, Ruth Hogben has become a long-term collaborator of the designer and directs the majority of his fashion films.
Knight's most recent editorial images are viewable in print in the 15 February 2015 issue of The Sunday Times Style, while uncut footage from the shoot, which took place at SHOWstudio's Motcomb Street headquarters, is available to view here.
