Giles Deacon’s clothes combine craft and couture sensibilities with a distinctively British aesthetic. Describing his garments as 'clothes that don’t blend into the background’, Deacon fuses eclectic references to create signature statement pieces and ultimately a radical vision for contemporary fashion.
Originally from Cumbria, Deacon grew up in the Lake District. With early intentions of becoming a marine biologist, Deacon found himself studying on an art foundation course at Harrogate College. Deacon went on to study fashion at Central Saint Martins and graduated in 1992. His first job took him to Paris where he worked for Jean Charles de Castelbajac. In 1998 Deacon was appointed as head designer for luxury Italian brand Bottega Veneta. His debut collection for the label was ultra sexy and edgy and established Deacon as a contemporary design innovator.
Bottega Veneta was then bought by the Gucci group and Deacon worked along side Tom Ford designing Gucci womenswear. In 2004 Deacon decided to launch his own name label and he presented his first collection at London Fashion Week. The same year he won ‘Best New Designer’ at the British Fashion Awards, and then in 2006 Deacon was awarded the prestigious British Designer of the Year. Currently as well as designing his own collection, Deacon also designs for British high street brand New Look which also includes a menswear line. Celebrities including Thandie Newton, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Moss are all enthusiasts of Deacon’s clothes.
Deacon is also a renowned illustrator whose work has appeared in Interview, The Face, Pop, i-D and Arena Homme Plus. Deacon has established his Giles label as a core fixture on the London Fashion Week schedule. His subversive and edgy presentations are valued as a barometer of cool British style.
