Nick Knight and couture doyenne Lady Amanda Harlech unite with model and physics scholar Alexia Wight, make-up artist Peter Philips, nail guru Marian Newman and haute coiffeur Sam McKnight for a shoot that explores the mathematics of beauty. With Knight on camera (in this case his iPhone) and Harlech on styling, the editorial - which appears in V magazine - celebrates the science and skill behind S/S 14's greatest haute couture and draws on Wight's interest in Calabi–Yau manifold. Kev Stenning will add to the scientific tone of the shoot by 3D scanning the fashionable works of art. Texture maps, which are the computer's representation of the scanned garments, are displayed alongside Knight's images.
The project was about exploring different dimensions,' Knight explains. 'I wanted to juxtapose what I, the photographer saw, against what the computer saw. When I look at the couture I see certain things that are useful or beautiful to me, just like when the computer captures the couture it also sees something that's useful to it, but that view is totally different.'
The shoot was streamed live on Saturday 1 February and Sunday 2 February 2014. Watch the footage to see Knight and Harlech create a stunning, mathematical universe out of each individual piece of couture.
