In addition to opening the Editing Fashion project up to its viewers, SHOWstudio has also invited a selection of internationally-based, professional editors from a range of different genres and geographical territories to tackle Nick Knight's Galliano footage and the selected soundtracks. This time working from a eight-hour package of rushes, editors from the worlds of Bollywood, feature film, independent art film, pornography, music promo among others were challenged to make a five minute cut.

Last updated Friday 23rd December
An offshoot from our three-month MOVING FASHION project at the end of 2005, EDITING FASHION shifted the focus of SHOWstudio's ongoing exploration of fashion film from direction to the editing process and from established, guest artists to the SHOWstudio viewer base. For this, we offered a package of source material –including exclusive film footage shot by Nick Knight and a selection of possible soundtracks by guest artists- that could be downloaded and edited by SHOWstudio Viewers. Viewers were asked to make an edit from the material provided which lasted up to two minutes. By keeping the source material the same in all cases, the emphasis was kept on the individual editor’s approach and authorship. The finished films could then be uploaded onto SHOWstudio from mid-January 2006, to be screened in the Viewers’ Cut gallery.
A second phase of this project saw a number of high-profile, internationally-based, professional editors from a range of different genres tackle the same footage to create a series of five-minute shorts in early 2006.

See how each character in the show was developed from a basic 'type' to a fully-fledged visual entity in these mood boards created by the John Galliano atelier. Using the special viewing tool to peruse the boards in detail, note the puppets devised to prototype the outfits, which also played a prominent role in the show itself.

Nick Knight worked with the cast of John Galliano's show for the week following its unveiling to elicit a series of performances that examined the views and personalities of the people as individuals, distancing them from the 'types' they played on the runway. For Knight, this keys into a longstanding exploration of the parameters of acceptable beauty.
Together with footage of the show itself, backstage views and some additional reportage material shot on the night of the show, these subsequent performances were captured on video and are being turned over to SHOWstudio Viewers to make their response to the highly emotive and ideologically charged issues Galliano's show engendered. Caricatures or characters? Using the unedited footage and soundtracks given here only, express your personal opinion in a film edit lasting up to two minutes. Completed Viewers' Cuts can be uploaded into the galley for screening from mid-January 2006.

Finalé!
Asking professional editors to squeeze our EDITING FASHION project into their busy schedules and attempting to send the material to far-flung geographical locations has meant the project has not always run to time. Our Russian contributor, Vladimir Boboshin has maintained extreme patience throughout, battling in true stalwart style with Moscow’s strict customs laws to ensure that his film finally reached us here at the SHOWstudio towers. We are extremely pleased to announce that the film has now been uploaded and is in its rightful place alongside the other Editors' Cuts. Vladimir's enthusiasm for the project is an attitude displayed by ALL of the editors involved and is what has kept the SHOWstudio team motivated over the last eight months.
It is with great excitement (and a huge sigh of relief!) that we are also able to announce that we have received and uploaded the eagerly awaited edit courtesy of Wong Kai Wei's very own editor and production designer William Chang. The impressive edit (slightly longer than the other cuts, but still observes the music and footage restrictions given to all of our other editors) possess many Chang trademarks -in particular, his use of sound design- and also serves as a spectacular finalé to the project. For the first time, you can now view all fourteen Editors' Cuts from the worlds of Bollywood, feature film, independent art film, pornography, music promo among others. So sit back, enjoy and don't forget to turn the volume up!
