Apathy Bat

Jewellery designer Kyle Hopkins created this 'Apathy Bat' during a two day residency at SHOWstudio which was broadcast live online. Hopkins inlaid a used cricket bat with fifty human teeth and decorated it with an intricately cut piece of brass. Hopkins designed the piece as a threat against apathy and a reminder to live life to the full.

Jewellery designer Kyle Hopkins created this Apathy Bat during a two day residency at SHOWstudio which was broadcast live online. Hopkins inlaid a used cricket bat with fifty human teeth and decorated it with an intricately cut piece of brass, which bears a striking resemblance to a Gustav Klimt painting. Hopkins designed the piece as a threat against apathy and a reminder to live life to the full.

The bat accompanies Hopkins' Death Mask which was made at the same time and was composed half of Hopkins' own face and half of a skull. It was then embedded with hundreds of his tiny signature figures.

Hopkins has garnered praise for his unique pieces of jewellery, which modify and transpose the body's architecture. With casts of ears and eyes hung as pendants or series of brass finger prints linked in a chain, Hopkins' adornments displace our bodily elements, reminding us of the vulnerability of flesh.
