Floras Vanitas,
Simon Costin,

Materials: Skull, Dutch Still Life Flower paintings
Dimensions: Variable

Internationally respected art director and set designer Simon Costin has taken inspiration from the Dutch Still-Life paintings of the early 1600s to create a magnificent piece for our Winter 2010 exhibition Florist. Aptly titled Flora Vanitas, Costin examines the concepts of the transient nature of vanity and the emptiness of earthly life. By playfully decorating a skull with a selection of cutouts taken from a 17th Century inspired image, Costin skillfully crafts an eerie ideology on fleeting life. The piece is rich in symbolic qualities and serves to remind the viewer of some edifying idea, such as vanity, temperance or mortality.
