Jewellery designer Jenifer Corker’s embroidered fire-screens reference a long forgotten feminine past-time which interwove intricate craft and social intrigue. That of the hand-held fire screen, whose function was to protect ladies' complexions from the blush of the fire or the gaze of a stranger while they gossiped about the latest scandals of court. As a means both to conceal the truth and resist the voyeur, these adorned shields are literal and figurative smoke screens
