Fashion Film: Under Milk Wood

by Rei Nadal on 12 February 2020

Filmed inside the Zabludowicz Collection in Kentish Town in the midst of London Fashion Week Men's, Rei Nadal documents John Alexander Skelton’s A/W 20 presentation.

Skelton’s Collection VIII made its debut in a theatrical performance by the designer's brother, Ryan Neil Skelton. Nadal captures Ryan as he recites the unfinished 1954 poetic radio play Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas which inspired the collection. With his face made-up by Nami Yoshida, the younger Skelton sweeps away bed sheets to reveal mannequins lying below. Dressed in a visible history crafted from fabrics such as Irish linen, waxed cotton and natural British wool, Ryan lifts the models one by one to standing, as Thomas' words bring the weathered companions to life.

'Under Milk Wood has been my favourite work of poetic form since I first heard it around 10 years ago. The translation into the collection is inspired by the characters Dylan Thomas writes about and also the people he surrounded himself during his lifetime, translating their personalities and the way they wore clothing into the collection.'
