Video Essay: Where Does Menswear Stand In 2021?

published on 31 March 2021

Fashion writer M-C Hill analyses the A/W 21 menswear collections, asking: What does the archetypal man look like in 2021? He frames his discussion around 'The Pack', a group of football hooligans in the 2009 film Awaydays.

Hill unpacks the need to belong, which underpins fashion, looking at the menswear archive community and the different uniforms presented on the digital menswear runways this season. Throughout, Hill discusses key themes from A/W 21, from suppressed male rage at Rick Owens to a homoerotic, rent boy-type sensuality at Lazoschmidl.

Hill also unpacks Raf Simons at Prada, Jonathan Anderson's Loewe, Glen Martens' Y/PROJECT and Comme des Garçons Homme Plus.

'The attitude and the swagger of the battles between gangs throughout the film, echo the game of clothes that's somewhat consecrated into maleness.'
