The last thing you would expect to see in a Victoria Beckham collection is elasticated waistbands. And yet, there they were this morning. Granted, they weren’t exactly sweatpants, but this was arguably as easy and relaxed as the Victoria Beckham woman, and the woman herself, could get. It is to her credit that Beckham has grown as a designer to dare and step away from both her own comfort zone and what’s happening around her. So, this season Beckham wanted ease and ease she delivered via, what she called in her notes, an ‘urban surf scene’. Put away all thoughts of tight wetsuits – this was long, loose and fluid, and as a collection one of the most confident and fun she has shown so far.

It was all about the neck and hem lines – halter-necks and gathered drawstrings at the top, midi and longer at the bottom. Woven checks sat with pure white and brilliant flashes of colour – a cobalt blue collar here, a red suede pocket there – and collages of colour-washed surf scenes and Hawaiian florals. Pleated skirts, wide culottes, roomy bombers and metallic crushed satin slips added to the feeling of ease and comfort and nonchalance. There wasn’t a high heel in sight – instead platform sandals and open heel loafers grounded everything even further. Excuse the pun but boy, is Victoria riding this wave.
