Born in Piacenza in the north of Italy, Giorgio Armani is one of the most successful fashion designers the country has produced, leading a business empire that spans fashion, fragrance, beauty, hotels and even restaurants. Starting out as a window dresser in the fashionable department store La Rinascente in Milan, Armani went on to design menswear at Nino Cerruti.
Launching his own line of menswear in 1975, Armani swiftly gained a reputation for his luxuriously relaxed silhouettes that created his own visual code of masculinity that took its lead from the architecture of the body. Armani began to produce womenswear in the same year and was soon lauded for creating an aesthetic that was at once casual and empowered.
Known for his strong relationship with Hollywood, Armani dresses many of the film industry's most glamourous stars for the red carpet and famously created the wardrobe for Richard Gere in 1980 film American Gigolo, crystallising a sense of sensuality and power that his clothes imbue upon the wearer.
