Gosha Rubchinskiy

Designer

Gosha Rubchinskiy is a fashion designer, photographer and film maker. He makes sportswear collections inspired by the romance of youth and Russian religious roots, concerned with the Russian post-Soviet mentality and influenced by growing up in a country undergoing huge political, economical and cultural change after the dissolution of the USSR in 1991.

Gosha Rubchinskiy studied at the Moscow College of Technology and Design and launched his emponymous menswear label, ГОША РУБЧИНСКИЙ (Gosha Rubchinskiy) in 2008. Referencing Reagan’s Cold War-description of the USSR, Rubchinskiy’s first collection, Empire of Evil was presented at the end of 2008 for S/S 2009. His second collection, Growing and Expanding, was shown in a disused Orthodox church-turned-gym in Moscow’s suburbs. Rubchinskiy’s third collection, The sunrise is not far behind the mountains, consisted of three parts: a video shot in St. Petersburg, a book of photographs and clothing. This trilogy was aimed at showing what’s going on in the heads of the young skaters and graffiti artists he was influenced by.

In 2010, the designer presented his forth collection, Slave, as a part of the Fashion East menswear installation.  In 2012, he started his collaboration with Comme des Garçons: the first time the Japanese brand has handled the production and international distribution of a designer outside of their own creative team. S/S 15 saw Rubchinskiy's first Paris Fashion Week catwalk show. In April 2018, Rubchinskiy announced the brand would no longer be operating but hinted at another venture in the works.
