Joana Vasconcelos

Joana Vasconcelos is an artist, born in Paris, who lives and works in Lisbon, Portugal. Vasconcelos studied Visual Arts at the Ar.Co School, Centre of Arts Visual Communication between 1989 and 1996. Her work directly addresses issues of collective identity such as class distinction, national identity and the status of women through the appropriation and subversion of pre-existing, commonplace objects , often displacing them from their original purpose or environment. Since 1994 Vasconcelos has exhibited both in Portugal and internationally. Her work has been featured in Stephen Snoddy and Deborah Robinson's book Joana Vasconcelos, published 2007.
