Karen Elson is a leading British model of the era. Initially spotted in the street in her hometown of Bolton, near Manchester in the North of England, it was a chance introduction to Steven Meisel in Milan that began her very singular career. Under Meisel's influence Elson created an incredibly distinctive look - which included the removal of her eyebrows, a severe hair cut, and flaming red hair colour. Ever since this look has been her trademark, earning her the nickname 'beautiful freak', and putting her at the forefront of the trend for unusual beauty. Before she was twenty Elson had been the face of Chanel, Gucci, Valentino and Versace. She has been photographed by international greats such as Peter Lindberg, Mario Testino, Craig McDean, Karl Largerfield, Nick Knight, Bruce Webber and Richard Avedon. In 2005, Elson won a British Fashion Award for Best Model, and has since gone on to pursue a music career alongside her work as a model, providing vocals for Robert Plants 'Last Time I Saw Her', and singing with Cat Power on a tribute to Serge Gainsbourg. Elson is also a member of the politically motivated cabaret troupe The Citizens Band, and in June 2005 married Jack White of the White Stripes. Elson gave birth to their first child, Scarlett Teresa, in May 2006, and the couple's second child, a boy named Henry Lee, was born in 2007.
