Matthew Stone

Artist

Matthew Stone is a multi-disciplinary artist living and working in London. Following his graduation from Camberwell Art School with BA (Hons) in Painting in 2004, Stone became a formative member of the South London !WOWOW! art collective, exhibiting in artist-led projects and throwing notorious art parties in disused buildings in South London. Working in performance, photography, installation, curating and writing, Stone’s work revolves specifically around creative interactions and community, based on the idea that the whole is worth more than the sum of its parts.

Stone’s first solo show was FutureHindsight at UNION gallery, London in 2007, revolving around a story written by Stone and Richard Elms and featuring seven Billboard sized photographs. Stone also invited friends to become involved in live performances for the three opening nights. Since this show, he has exhibited at Terence Koh’s gallery in New York, Newcastle’s Baltic Gallery and The Centre for Contemporary Art in Glasgow.

Stone has contributed to both i-D and Dazed & Confused, and has spoken at London’s ICA. He collaborates with the likes of Gareth Pugh and FKA Twigs.
