Michael Kors

Fashion Designer

American fashion designer Michael Kors studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York before launching his eponymous fashion label in 1981. The line was soon picked up by a number of high profile retailers, including Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue.

In 1997, Kors joined French house Céline as the first women's ready-to-wear designer, where he developed the accessories division of the brand alongside introducing a sleekness to its ready-to-wear. He left the house in 2003 to concentrate on his own label, having branched into menswear through the Michael Kors Men's line in 2002.

Michael Kors leads a fashion empire that, alongside the mainline, also features sister labels MICHAEL Michael Kors and KORS Michael Kors. Kors has become a household name and familiar face, having been a judge of the fashion design reality television show Project Runway from 2004 to 2012.

In 1999, Kors won the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year, winning Menswear Designer of the Year in 2003. In 2010, Kors became the youngest recipient of the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award from the CFDA.

In 2011, Michael Kors Holdings went public. In 2017 the company bought Jimmy Choo for £921 million, and in 2018, Versace, for $2.1 billion. In 2019, Michael Kors Holdings changed its name to Capri Holdings Limited.
