Michel Gaubert

Sound Illustrator

Michel Gaubert is a Paris-based sound illustrator working in the field of fashion. He crafts custom runway soundtracks, playlists and compilations for a portfolio of prestigious and avant-garde clients that include fashion houses from Paris, Milan, London and New York from Raf Simons, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Valentino and Chanel to Proenza Schouler, JW Anderson, Jeremy Scott and Anthony Vaccarello. Known as Switzerland for his neutral approach to each client, Gaubert fosters a unique relationship with all his designers - a crucial bond that facilitates the dynamic creative exchange required for the tailor-made soundscapes that set the mood for each show.

Gaubert began his career in 1978 as a buyer for the indie record store Champs Disques in Paris. While travelling to London, Belgium and America to buy records for the store, Gaubert became inspired to produce his own sounds and began playing at the Palace, a Parisian nightclub popular with designers like Thierry Mugler, Claude Montana and Kenzo Takada. In the early 90s, Gaubert first began working with Karl Lagerfeld on the sound for his namesake label, before progressing to work for both Chanel and Fendi. In 2016, Mercedes Benz immortalised Gaubert as the puppet Petit Michel in a short promo film for their international fashion week agenda. The film went viral and prompted then-Valentino designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli to invite the puppet front row at their men’s runway show in January.

Gaubert is also well known for his cult Instagram account @michelgaubert, a reference point for social commentary on fashion, music and pop culture as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the industry.
