Paula Varjack

Paula Varjack is a spoken word artist. Varjack performs in a variety of locations, from art galleries and cabaret nights to poetry slams; often with live and recorded music, and with video projection. She has collaborated with a number of international music producers including Cloudfist Conceptz, Ludwig Berger, Backdraft and Zed Vantz.
In 2009, her first solo show, Kiss and Tell, premiered at Hau Zwei as part of the Berlin 100 Degrees Theatre festival. In 2010 she was one of the nine artists-in-residence for the EU-funded Poetry Slam Days project, creating a multilingual show Smoke and Mirrors, which went on tour over 20 European cities. Varjack also presented her own monthly arts radio show while living in Berlin.
Varjack is a London Pleasance associate artist and a Barbican Open Lab artist. She has been commissioned to make work by the Barbican, Battersea Arts Centre, Camden People’s Theatre, Fuel, the Marlborough, Attenborough Centre for the Arts, Upstart Theatre, Beam, and First Draft Cabaret.
She is the creator of the Anti-Slam, a satirical take on Poetry Slams where the lowest score wins. In addition to creating, she facilitates writing and performance workshops with a wide range of age groups, and mentors emerging artists on developing their creative practice. Born in Washington DC to a Ghanaian mother and a British father, out of many places she has lived she considers east London to be 'home'.
