Philip Start

Designer

Philip Start is a fashion entrepreneur, behind the Start and Mr. Start brands. Start was founded in 2002 by Philip Start and his wife Brix Smith-Start, after their observation that there was nowhere to shop for designer fashion in London's up-and-coming Shoreditch area. The inaugural Start boutique offered both menswear and womenswear and was located at 59 Rivington Street. Its popularity led to a quick expansion, and womenswear took up its own larger premises across the street at number 42 by 2004. The final addition to the Start family was established in 2008 and is now the home to Philip Start’s own tailoring line, Mr Start.

Philip Start founded Mr. Start to provide a fresh tailoring aesthetic and offer modern luxury at an accessible price. The store has since become a contemporary sartorial destination, providing both ready-to-wear clothing and a made to measure service for both men and women. A milestone for the brand came in June 2012, as Mr. Start showcased its Spring/Summer 2013 collection to international press and buyers at the first London Collections: Men. This was followed by the launch of Mr. Start for Women in September that year, a capsule offering of shirting.
