Richard Gray
Illustrator
Richard Gray is an illustrator, working primarily with ink, pencil, gouache and airbrush techniques. Gray began his professional career during his first year at Middlesex University in 1987-1988, when whilst studying fashion design, his illustrations were entered for a memorial competition for Antonio Lopez and spotted by the Italian style icon Anna Piaggi. Commissions quickly followed for both Vogue Italia for Piaggi’s infamous Doppie Pagine, and for Vanity.
During his career, he has collaborated with the likes of Agent Provocateur, Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Boudicca, Givenchy, Julien MacDonald, Antonio Berardi, Miguel Adrover, Dunhill, Printemps, Rayban, Tumi, Immodesty Blaize, Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue and William Baker. Editorially his work has been used in many international publications including Vogue Italia, Vogue Gioiello, Vogue Pelle, V Magazine, Stella, Saturday Telegraph Magazine, Decoy Magazine, Io Donna, Mixte, Commons & Sense, Observer, The Independent, A Magazine curated by Stephen Jones and Madame Figaro.
In 2004, Gray created an illustration for the Alexander McQueen installation at the Fashion At Belsay exhibition at Belsay Hall, and also illustrated McQueen's Black Exhibition. He created a portrait of stylist Isabella Blow for the invitiation to McQueen's S/S 08 show La Dame Bleue. His work is in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Gray teaches across all three years of the Westminster University BA Fashion Design course.
