Ulrich Lehmann

Fashion Historian

Ulrich Lehmann is a fashion academic and author. He was previously Professor of Fashion at the University for the Creative Arts at Rochester and Research Fellow at the Victoria and Albert Museum, before becoming Associate Professor of Design Practice and Theory at the New School in New York.

He studied philosophy, sociology and the history of art in Frankfurt., Paris and London. His research interests are the histories of material culture in Europe from the 1780s to the present day. He has curated exhibitions on fashion, photography, automotive and product design, and has been contributing to Addressing the Century: 100 Years of Art and Fashion (Hayward Gallery, 1999), and to Modernism: Designing a New World (V&A, 2006) and Surreal Things: Surrealism and Design (V&A, 2007). His books include Josiah McElheny: Object Lesson, Tigersprung: Fashion in Modernity, and Fashion and Materialism.
