Helmut Lang was founded by the Australian fashion designer of the same name in 1986. Lang is known for his deconstructivist and at times severe garments, which were synonymous with the minimalist aesthetic which was at its height in the late eighties and early nineties. Lang became famous for his simple yet refined designs for men and women and moved Helmut Lang from Australia to New York City in 1997, where he was one of the first designers to live stream their fashion shows and advertised on the tops of New York taxies.
In 2004 Helmut Lang was acquired by the Prada Group, which lead to Lang's departure from the label in 2005. In 2006 Helmut Lang was then acquired by fast retailing subsidiary Link Theory Holdings and was relaunched with new designers in 2007.
In 2017 Link Theory Holdings chief executive Andrew Rosen appointed Dazed editor-in-chief Isabella Burley the editor-in-residence of Helmut Lang. Burley then recruited Hood By Air founder Shayne Oliver to create a special S/S 18 collection which will debut at New York Fashion Week in September 2017.
