Brand

Jil Sander is a German fashion label, founded by designer Jil Sander. Sander opened her first Hamburg store in 1968, aged 24. After designing for her own boutique for five years, in 1973 Sander launched her women's ready-to-wear line in Milan. Her understated designs reached great popularity with the advent of nineties minimalism, and in 1999 the Prada Group acquired 75% of the label, leading to Sander's departure shortly thereafter. Sander briefly returned from 2003, but left again in 2004.

In 2005, Belgian designer Raf Simons started as creative director. Having previously designed exclusively for men, Simons' debut womenswear collection, which interpreted the minimal codes of the house with an architectural bent, was received enthusiastically by press and buyers alike. He held the position of head designer for both men's and women's ready-to-wear until 2012, when Sander returned to the brand as head designer. She left for the third time in 2014, and was succeeded by Rodolfo Paglialunga. Husband-and-wife designers Lucie and Luke Meier became creative directors in 2017, taking over from Paglialunga.
